VETERANS marched through Newport city centre to the sound of bugle and drums in memory of sailors who lost their lives in conflict while serving with the Merchant Navy. Around 100 people in military uniform marched from the Royal British Legion to Mariner’s Green, off Cardiff Road, some with the aid of a crutch or stick. People had travelled from across South Wales, Bristol and even Yorkshire to attend the service. In this 70th anniversary year of the Battle of the Atlantic spare a special thought for those 32,000 plus souls who were lost in what was ‘the longest action of World War Two, Merchant Navy sailors who lost their lives in conflict have been honoured in this way in Newport for 16 years. Tribute to Merchant Navy A record attendance at the Merchant Navy War Memorial in Newport. Thanks to the Newport Council the fine memorial is more accessible. The monument was surrounded by a small wall and it was a tight fit to squeeze all the standard bearers, mourners and dignitaries into a small space. Now a large area has been handsomely paved presenting fine views of the memorial and ample space for all who wish to take part in this brief moving ceremony. Merchant Navy Association officials and members travelled great distances to be present. It is a treasured event in Newport's year. The city has long honoured the immense sacifices of Merchant Seamen - one in four died in the last war. That's a higher proportion than the fatalities in all other services. LINK
