Dear Sirs, are any of your members veterans of the Italian campaign WW2?? I am currently carrying out research on my Great Uncle Eric Slade (Barry born) who was called up in May 1943 to the Welch Regiment but was transferred to the 8th Battalion of the Royal Fusiliers (56 London Division, 167 Brigade) on the 12th of October 43. He was captured at Anzio on the 16th Feb 44 on the first day of Operation Fischfang and remained at Stalag 7a Moosburg until the end of the war. If any of your members are Italy Star holders or were incarcerated at Stalag 7a I would love to have a chat with them Hope you can be of help Kindest Regards Philp Slade tel 01446 420201 6 Heol Gwerthyd, Pencoedtre Village, Barry CF63 1HJ

Sir, I read your post with interest, I cannot assist personaly as your request is not in the field that I research and unfortunately know little of. We at Tregenna do respect all loss of life and wish we knew more that would assist you.
I notice that you posted under the Royal British Legion, Barry Branch section and I would be pleased to arrange that they recieve a copy of your posting when I am in Barry at the weekend and can also e.mail the same to them if you wish.
I am certain that they will assist in every way possible. I can also suggest contact to a local Military Historian, whom I am certain can help further.
There is also hope that someone may read your posting and reply - we do feature more Merchant Navy on our site, so cannot guarantee a result. please except that we are interested and will do all we can to help. We will be at the BARRY MEMORIAL HALL AND THEATRE on Saturday 22nd November 2008 10.30am to 4.00pm in support of The Merchant Navy Association (Wales) Barry Branch and Barry Merchant Seamen.org.
If you can attend: The 'Barry at War' 2008 Exhibition will commemorate the role that Barrians played in the conflicts of the last century. Following on from last November's hugely successful exhibition on 'Barry and the Great War', There may be many people at the exhibition that may be able to assist.
'BARRY AND THE TWO WORLD WARS' BARRY MEMORIAL HALL AND THEATRE Saturday 22nd November 2008 10.30 a.m. to 4.00 p.m.
Thirty members of the South Wales Branch of the Western Front Association and the South Wales Militaria Society will be exhibiting items from their personal collections from the two World Wars of the last century. These will include weapons, uniforms and equipment, memorabilia, artefacts and medals. Teams of re-enactors dressed in uniforms of the First and Second World Wars, including the WW2 South Wales Borderers, the 5th Duke of Cornwall's Regiment, the Home Guard, the Lovat Scouts and the American 101st Airborne, will be attending to talk to visitors about the lives of the men serving at this time. Military vehicles will also be on display outside the Hall.
There will be displays on the men commemorated on Barry's Roll of Honour, the American Army in Barry, the Island Farm Prisoner of War Camp and the Barry men who served with the Merchant Navy. Penarth Wargames Society will also be present to show how battles were fought during the two wars. A 'Militaria Roadshow' will enable visitors to bring along items of Militaria to learn more about them.
Experts in military service genealogy will be on hand to assist visitors in finding out more about their relatives who served in the First or Second World Wars. They will provide advice and guidance on where to find the right information. Dr Hicks will also have available his database on the men and women on Barry's Roll of Honour for both wars.
A programme of illustrated talks on the battles of the Great War, including the Somme and Passchendaele, will take place during the day. Period music, video displays and a WW2 NAAFI Café will complete what should be a memorable day.
I can put you in contact with the organiser or if you can attend on the day, I will make further enquiries into how we may best advise you and pass on all info and introduce you to those that may assist.
If I can help in anyway I will do so and wish you every sucess. Please e.mail me at hernamewas.ss@tiscali.co.uk for the contact details of the RBL, Barry Branch and Historian as mentioned earlier or advise me if you wish me to forward your request for assistance onto them.
Please also mail me if you require further details / information on the exhibition. I am certain that your attendence will prove fruitful.
Regards Keith.
