MERCHANT NAVY DAY SEPT 3, EVERY YEAR.
This year the Vale of Glamorgan will hold a Merchant Navy Service in Barry, during the 20th year of the MNA Barry branch. In the history of the branch they held an annual service every year. this was generally around the 17th of September as many attended either Tower Hill or Swansea for MN Day. The County and Town will fly the Red Duster as they do every year and on other occasions.
As branch numbers dwindled, there was a limited service last year and the chairman crossed the bar recently. This year the County of South Glamorgan and the town of Barry will host the commemoration and hopefully, this will continue in to the future.
I strive to ensure things continue after us, for them.
Today secured the time, date, venue. (MN Monument: Barry) For 11.00 AM. Friday. September 2, not far away.
I have the guest list, will have the media coverage, have no doubts of the public support. Next job is to hopefully ask the church for every assistance.
Although, a day before MN Day itself, we have many good reasons for our choice of date.
To ensure all and every possible attendance, Friday Sept 2, is our chosen date as myself and the branch will attend Swansea and Newport Tower Hill.
We also have locally a Barry at War event, Sept 3 - 4. We hope to both not only support this but be a part of the weekend.
A static display in the town library during Merchant Navy week will feature, MN Day - 20 years of the branch and the forgotten of the forgotten service.
Hopefully, many that will attend the War Weekend at Barry Island, may attend our Merchant Navy Service on the Friday also. We intend a static display at the event featuring the Paddle Steamer Barry, during the 75th year of her loss and branch members being present at the museum event between all else occurring.
Our weekend will continue in to Monday 5, when branch members hope to be aboard the Waverley sailing the Bristol Channel, a PS Barry presentation will occur on board her present day name sake. Our paddler, entered WW1 under her own name of Barry, around Gallipoli re-named Barryfield. Peace time covered for Waverley and bore her name. Lost as Snaefell WW2.
MORE TO FOLLOW ASAP.
