On the first day of World War 2..... 3rd September 1939..........
Within hours of the British declaration of War, SS Athenia, a British cruise ship en route from Glasgow, Scotland to Montreal, Canada is torpedoed by the German submarine U-30 250 miles (400 km) Northwest of Ireland. 112 passengers and crew members are killed. The "Battle of the Atlantic" starts.
We will remember them.......
On Merchant Navy Day, 3 September 2007, at 600 locations across the UK, Red Ensigns were flying ashore, to remind us of our island nation’s ongoing dependence on Merchant Navy seafarers - past, present and future.
