As Commemorations take place on the beaches in Normandy in France in memory of all those who lost their lives during DDay, lets take a moment to remember some 2450 merchant seamen who died during Operation Neptune. This was a combined Royal & Merchant Navy sea borne operation to land the Allied armies in Normandy between June 6th and September 1944. Over 1,200 Merchant Navy ships took part in the Landings on the five beachheads. A new memorial in Arromanches (2003) is dedicated solely to the Merchant Navy dead. "Look out to sea and say a prayer, For those who rest beneath, They gave their lives that you may share, A Europe that is free." By Donald Hunter. LINK 1LINK 2LINK 3
