Heroes of the Gulf: Arab Merchant Seaman & World War Two -
project from Horn Development Association presentation today in Pierhead
SPONSORED BY Vaughan Gethin AM (Assembly Member) Cardiff South & Penarth
SEMINAR – Heroes of the Gulf: Arab Seamen & World War 2
3rd October 2018 12 Noon – 1.30pm:
The lunch time event that was held in The Main Hall, Pierhead,
The National Assembly for Wales, Cardiff Bay, Cardiff, CF99 1NA.
This was the conclusion of an 18-month Heritage Lottery Funded Project `Heroes of the Gulf: Arab Merchant Seaman and World War 2’ that has sought to show the contribution, sacrifice and commitment to Britain of Muslim people during the hardest of times.
This is our second successful Heritage project and we have exceeded the outcomes agreed as part of the funding and have sought to leave a legacy that will be beneficial to other BAME communities, academics, local government, education, families seeking information about their forebears and the public. The legacy we have sought to leave is factual, through several databases we have produced information not readily available that should affect remembrance of war dead at a local level, especially in Wales; provide the first publicly available statistics on numbers of Merchant Seaman that died as a result of direct enemy action and provide information on who their next of kin were. This means that for all BAME people the databases will show family connections. Everyone who attends the event will be sent three databases. These will provide details relating to all of those serving on the UK Merchant Navy that died as a result of direct enemy action in WW2: 1) Arab merchant seaman; 2) Caribbean born merchant seaman; 3) Welsh born seaman and every seaman whose last port was in Wales.
