Merchant navy memorial to be built on Plymouth Hoe.
A memorial to Plymouth’s merchant sailors and fishermen is set to be built on Plymouth Hoe after a former seaman raised more than £31,000 in a crowdfunding campaign.
Plans have now been submitted to Plymouth City Council – and approved - for the Merchant Navy and Fishing Fleet Memorial to be sited on the Promenade, within the Hoe Conservation Area.
It is planned for work to start in mid 2019 with the memorial ready by September, in time for the start of Mayflower 400 celebrations – provided some more cash can be raised.
The statue will sit between the Grade I listed naval Memorial Monument, and the Grade II listed Drake Statue and Armada Memorial.
