VINTAGE PADDLE STEAMER “WAVERLEY” WON’T APPEAR AT PENARTH PIER THIS YEARThe vintage excursion paddle-steamer “Waverley” – reputed to be the last sea-going paddle steamer in the world – is not going to be going anywhere this year. It’s the first time in 45 years that Waverley has had to cancel an entire summer season. The ship is in need of a £2,000,000 boiler replacement and her owners, the Waverley – Paddle Steamer Preservation Society, have launched a new appeal to fund the extensive work. It means that neither MV Balmoral or PS Waverley will be seen at Penarth Pier this summer – and could potentially mean the permanent end of excursion ship sailings from Penarth Pier. One expert said “It’s a fact of life that ships don’t last forever – they are all depreciating assets and inevitably the day comes for every one of them that they can no longer put to sea “ Waverley Excursions say they know the news will be “disappointing for the tens of thousands of passengers who would have sailed with us this year around the UK.” LINK
