I would like to share something that the people of Barry can see what our ancestors done for us on November 25th it will be the anniversary of the death of 4 merchant seamen who sailed out of Barry in January 1942 I will give a brief account of the last voyage of these brave men this is taken from the book Welsh Sailors of the second world war. This was related to me by Chris Burt who sailed with them and then published in the book. They sailed out of Barry on the SS Harborough to the bitter lakes in Egypt with stores for the 8th Army fighting Rommel they then sailed on to Durban loaded with coal for Argentina all the time sailing without any escort for the last seven months loaded more cargo for the USA they then we're told to make for Trinidad to join a convoy for New York on September 14th they were torpedoed at nine o'clock in the morning as they lowered the boats the U boat 515 surfaced and started shelling the shop to sink it but credit to the U boat captain when he seen the crew were struggling to get clear of the ship he stopped the shelling till the crew were clear they lost 3 crew members but the rest were ok and after 3 days in an open boat managed to reach Tobago they were then sent to Trinidad where they waited a few weeks before being sent to New York remember while they were shipwrecked their money stopped so they were anxious to get back as quick as possible so the crew split up but the Barry men stayed together but Chis Burt had to join another ship but they all arranged to meet in Cardiff on Boxing day the Barry men joined the Ocean Crusader but when Chris Burt docked in Liverpool when back home made enquiries about the Ocean Crusader was told she was torpedoed in mid Atlantic on November the 25th the Barry s men names were William Vaughan,Harry Hobbs,George Weaver and Charles Moseley it will be 77 years since they gave their lives for our freedom plus remember the other Barry seamen who also sacrificed their lives
