Just to keep you up to date. The following is the content of a message I have sent to Cardiff Council, Cardiff Bay Senedd Member and M.P. and Cardiff Harbour Authority, after first discussing it with our Chairman.
We are concerned about the events that took place outside the Senedd building recently which involved the Merchant Navy Memorial. It appears that no physical damage was done but the disrespect shown beggars belief and we thank you for providing the protective barrier around the memorial albeit after the event.
However, we are also concerned that the barrier does not become a “permanent” feature in the short term and will be removed as soon as possible. If further events are expected perhaps the barrier could be erected in advance and taken down during the clean up.
The memorial represents thousands of Merchant Seafarers past and present who have no known grave but the sea and provides a source of comfort to their relatives. A place where they can go and touch the memorial, lay flowers or crosses and reflect on their loss. It is important therefore that they are afforded access to the memorial.
Cheers
Byron
