To: Revd David Potterton, Principal Chaplain at the Sailors’ Society RE: Merchant Seafarers Remembered Dear Sir / Revd Potterton, May I initially quickly introduce myself and as quickly move onto myMenquiry. I extend fraternal greetings from the Merchant Navy Association (Wales) Barry Branch and many other’s, I am the IT Officer for the Branch and also liaise with many others in promoting awareness. I write in regard to the 23rd September 2010 and the special event being organised by the global charity, The Sailors' Society, where over a 24 hour period, each of the 35,675 names inscribed on the memorial will be read aloud. Many like myself have really, only recently heard of this special event to mark World Maritime Day in what is the International Year of the Seafarer and that will recognise the contribution of each and every seafarer named on the Tower Hill Memorial. The only major information found thus far would be via the CWGC web site and although explains the event, does not explain the finer detail and how we may involve or inform others further. www.cwgc.org/news.asp?newsid=183&view=yesWith just over a week to go, I seek information that may aid further awareness to all MN and family of those lost etc. As you can imagine the news of the event has touched the hearts of those that know, although the thought is on how best we may pass on the message and invite the prayers and thought to the many that have as yet not discovered the intended Remembrance of Merchant Seafarers on 23rd September and would be saddened to miss out on a chance to remember the lost. Many within the Country if not Internationally would herald the thought of such an epic remembrance and would desire to know more, especially as this would provide a chance to remember loved ones. Although I / we can commence quickly to inform all in our known circles of the information thus far released via the CWGC, ask that you may respond / reply ASP as time is now of the essence. I would imagine that as the reading of all names and ships on the National Merchant Navy Memorials in Trinity Gardens, London will be read aloud, this may be mentioned in all press and media or can we attempt to promote all further? Would this epic occasion be intended in some way for broadcast and how may we best advise others of the same? Would all be recorded that later those that wish to purchase an entire set or that which is personal to them etc on CD or similar format, be available each copy by section including opening / closing words? Would love a reply / response with anything at all that may assist us to advise others. And further can we assist further. I regret that I write in haste of this occasion and request any further thoughts, advice and information for the relatives and all related. Regards, Keith Greenway. “Say not in grief ‘he is no more’ but live in thankfulness that he was”. Hebrew proverb.

It is important that we do all possible to ensure that as many MN, family, friends and loved ones as possible are aware and are given the opportunity to reflect and remember our Merchant Seafarer’s in particular next week.
The Sailor’s Society and CWGC are to hold a “BIG REMEMBRANCE” on the 23rd of September in Trinity Gardens. This has gained more interest than they imagined. As a Maritime Charity, the Sailors' Society will be marking World Maritime Day by reading aloud all 35,675 names of those Seafarers whose names are recorded on all three Memorials in Trinity Gardens. This is a mammoth undertaking, especially as those reading will be doing so in a solemn and dignified manner. The CWGC should be promoting the event and releasing all to the National Press, T.V. and Radio etc.
The reading will commence at 0001hrs on 23rd September and conclude on or before 2400hrs the same day. In order to complete the task, it is important that readers maintain the necessary reading rate necessary to ensure everyone's name will be read as intended. It is anticipated that the Minister of Shipping will visit to read some names as well as three veterans from the former Prince of Wales Sea Training School (formerly run but the Sailors' Society). Apart from these planned interruptions, the reading will be undertaken by a team of 5 Chaplains, led by Revd. David Potterton (three reading the First World War Merchant Navy Veterans during the night and early hours of 23rd September followed by WW2 veterans during the daylight hours. The day will conclude with the reading of the names of those Merchant Navy men lost during the Falklands Conflict.
Trinity Gardens is closed to the public from dusk to dawn but when open, the reading of names will continue in public for all visiting the gardens to hear until it closes again. A simple flyer will be available explaining what is happening and why. The final names will be read, as many died in darkness, whilst the world slept. Of course, friends are welcome to visit during the day but unfortunately there will be no opportunity to share in the reading of names as they must not break the rhythm or pace of reading if they are to conclude within the 24hour of World Maritime Day.
Please, do all you can to promote the event as widely as may be possible, it is hoped that publically reading the names of loved ones will provide some comfort to those who will welcome the remembrance of a loved one or ship mate.
THE LEAST WE CAN DO IS INFORM ALL AND SPARE A MOMENT OR TWO OF THOUGHT ON SEPTEMBER 23rd:

THE BIG REMEMBRANCE
Tue, Sep 14, 2010
Dear Keith,
Many thanks for your email which I received tonight on Reunion Island on the Indian Ocean where I am spending a few days with Sailors' Society staff.
Your email raises a number of questions which in and of themselves confirm that the BIG REMEMBRANCE on 23rd September in Trinity Gardens has gained more interest than we imagined. As a Maritme Charity, the Sailors' Society will be marking World Maritime Day by reading aloud all 35,675 names of those seafarers whose names are recorded on all three Memorials in Trinity Gardens. This is a mamoth undertaking, especialy as those reading willl be doing so in a solemn and dignified manner. I admit that this was my idea and that it seems to have taken off as an event in ways that were initially unexpected. The CWGC have promoted lthe event and publicised it to the national press, t.v. and radio etc.
Apart from these planned interuptions, the reading will be undertaken by a team of 5 Chaplains, led by myself (three reading the First World War Merchant Navy Veterans during the night and early hours of 23rd September followed by WW2 veterans during the daylight hours. The day will conclude with the reading of the names of those Merchant Navy men lost during the Falklands Conflict.
An official Press Release is available from jwebber@sailors-society.org This may however be the same as you have found on CWGC's site. I am sorry that I cannot forward one to you but I don't have one on my computer.
I am thrilled that news of the event seems to have not suprisingly touched the hearts of those who have heard about it. Trinity Gardens is closed to the public from dusk to dawn but when open, the reading of names will continue in public for all visiting the gardens to hear until it closes again. A simple flyer will be available explaining what is happening and why. THe final names will be read, as many died in darkness, whilst the world slept. Of course, friends are welcome to visit during the day but unfortunately there will be no opportunity to share in the reading of names as we must not break the rythm or pace of reading if we are to conclude within the 24hour of World Maritime Day.
Please do all you can to promote the event as widely as possible. We hope that publically reading the names of loved ones will provide some comfort to those who will welcome the remembrance of a loved one or ship mate. No recording will be made as it is impossible to engineer a recording of such length. However, words spoken at the beginning and end wil be passed to the press for publication. An article will be written after the event giving a full account of the 24 hours. I hope this wil be cirulated in the MNA Magazine and others. I hope this helps. Forgive 'tryping' errors but I wanted to get this back to you straight away. If I can be of any further assistance to you, even visiting your Branch after the event to talk about it, just let me know. Yours, from a ver humid Indian Ocean - looking forward to being wet again at the weekend when I get home! Kind regards, David David Potterton (Revd) Principal Chaplain, Saailors' Society

TOWER HILL
Behind each name a story lies
A seaman lost, a hero dies,
Duty wrought across the waves
A tale unheard in ocean graves.
J.E.
I really cannot thank Captain Joe Earl enough for this tribute.
