The practice of "women and children first" onto lifeboats in the event of a ship sinking is known as the 'Birkenhead Drill' after HMS Birkenhead which sank off the coast of South Africa in 1852. To prevent rushing the lifeboats, Lieutenant Colonel Seton commanded his men to stand firm and ensure women and children boarded first. A total of 445 men died, but every woman and child on board was saved. A monument to this event stands at Woodside Ferry Terminal. VIA: Western Approaches HQ - The Battle of the Atlantic Experience
