War veterans commemorate 70th anniversary of the Battle of the Atlantic WORLD War II veteran Thomas Sheridan says Australians need to know more about the important Battle of the Atlantic which spanned the entire six years of WWII. Mr Sheridan, 91, on Sunday attended a commemorative service at Liverpool Anglican Cathedral to mark the 70th anniversary of the battle. The city was the strategic centre of efforts to fight and win what was the longest military campaign of the war. Mr Sheridan told AAP the service was "very, very touching" before a huge crowd. "It was very emotional for me because I kept thinking of those who didn't make it," the ex-air gunner and armourer said. "I dwelt a little bit on the 243 young Australian boys from my own squadron that didn't make it home." Over the weekend naval vessels from around the world tied up at Liverpool docks for the commemoration, in scenes reminiscent of those dark days seven decades ago.
