Ushakov Medals

The Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs (Mr William Hague):

I am pleased to announce that formal approval has been given to a recommendation for an exception to the rules on the acceptance of foreign awards to allow eligible British nationals to accept and wear the Russian Ushakov Medal.

Hundreds of Arctic Convoy veterans are to receive a Russian bravery medal.

The government has decided to let the veterans wear the Ushakov Medal after previously saying it broke rules in foreign decorations, because veterans had already received a UK medal for their service.

But an exception has been made and President Putin awarded the first of those medals earlier this week
