Britain’s ‘Island Nation’ dependence on Merchant Navy seafarers was celebrated across the UK on Merchant Navy Day, 3 September, when Seafarers UK successfully campaigned for local councils to fly the Red Ensign – the British Merchant Navy’s official flag – in public places and on civic buildings.
