Scottish veteran presents a gift to the Arctic Convoys Museum in St Petersburg
A WWII Veteran Mr Murray Haddow who took part in the six Arctic convoys and was awarded with the Admiral Ushakov medal presented Consulate General of Russia in Edinburgh with a painting, which is a gift to a new Arctic Convoys Museum in St Petersburg at the Maritime College named after Russian admiral Stepan Makarov. He commissioned his daughter-in-law Fiona Haddow, a Scottish artist, to paint a Memorial stone at Cove in Wester Ross, North West Scotland. The backdrop of the painting is Loch Ewe where many of the Convoys sailed from. The wording on the stone, which was installed with support from the veterans, reads: In memory of our shipmates Who sailed from Loch Ewe During WWII They lost their lives In the bitter Arctic sea battles To North Russia And never returned To this tranquil anchorage We will always remember them.
