VIA: Victorian Barry Experience. On this day 31st July 1897, WATCH OUT FOR MARINE MINES NEAR SULLY ISLAND AND BARRY. The Severn Division Royal Engineers arrived in Barry by special train from Cardiff and camped at Nells Point, Barry Island. The Engineers were posted to stay in Barry on a training exercise until 14th August 1897. During their stay they planned to lay MARINE MINES between SULLY ISLAND and BARRY. Shipping had been warned by notices in the newspapers to keep away from the buoys painted GREEN AND WHITE as these were placed to show the positions of the mines.
