Dover's iconic white cliffs will be the setting for a new national war memorial remembering the 1.7million men and women killed in the First and Second World Wars.

The names of all the servicemen and women, merchant navy personnel and civilians who died in defence of the British Isles will be inscribed on the wall.

Looking into a date for completion, 4 August 2014 seems most likely as reported by the BBC:

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission currently held the names of 1.7 million on its register but names were still being found and they would also be added to the memorial.

The National War Memorial and the British Merchant Navy:

Over 30,000 UK Merchant Navy personnel were killed in WWII, often in terrible circumstances far from home with no grave to record their passing. Without their contribution, this country could have been starved into submission with disastrous consequences for subsequent generations. The National War Memorial to be built on Dover’s Western Height will include each and every name of the 1.7 million who died in the service of this country. My uncle was a Chief Engineer in the Merchant Navy who served on the Murmansk convoys. He survived. Many of his friends and fellow sailors did not.
