On Saturday 3rd November 2007, The Newport Branch of the Merchant Navy Association will exercise its right to march through the City. This follows the Associations original first march after being invited to receive such status and the same being bestowed upon them.
Newport Branch MNA, were the first body to be granted such status as the proclamation of Freedom since Newport gained its own City status. Mr. Bert Bale, Chairman of the Branch is proud that members of the Merchant Navy Association were remembered first by the new City, as he was and has remained in the fore-front of gaining recognition for what was in the past describe as the Forgotten Service.
The Freedom of the City and Remembrance March: will commence at 10.30 from the Monument, NEAR, The Police Station / Royal Gwent Hospital. The March will continue through the centre of the City. The Newport Branch will entertain visitors at a reception following the event.
We hope that there will be a good turn out on the day and the people of both Newport and surrounding areas support these good men. They represent not only the British Merchant Navy, but all those that perished whillst keeping our supply lines open, many of whom have still not returned home from the sea. Newport’s own Merchant Seamen played a vital role in both World Wars and in other conflicts and should be remembered: LEST WE FORGET.
The City of Newport in this regard is that of Newport, Gwent. South Wales.
