Haida's bell tolls for ships lost during Battle of Atlantic:The ceremony took place Sunday at the HMCS Haida — one of the 38 local attractions open to the public for the weekend-long Doors Open event — as a tribute to those ships and people lost in the six-year battle. But while many came out for the Haida tour, not everyone was aware of the annual battle commemoration. The Battle of the Atlantic, the longest campaign of the Second World War, was considered the "seminal event" for the Royal Canadian Navy. Twenty-four Canadian naval and 72 merchant ships were lost, as well as numerous maritime patrol aircraft. More than 5,000 members of the RCN, RCAF and Merchant Navy perished. LINK
