On awarding the Medal of Ushakov British veterans of the Northern Convoys

On 24 July a ceremony of awarding Arctic convoys veterans with Ushakov medals took place at the Russian Embassy in the UK. Medals were awarded to veterans by Russian Ambassador Alexander Yakovenko. The ceremony began with a minute of silence in memory of those killed in the crash of Malaysian Airliner. Taking into account relatives of veterans ceremony was attended by about hundred people. official photo of the Ambassador with veterans was made during the event (published on the website of the Embassy).

Ceremony held in London to honour servicemen with Ushakov Medals: 31 July 2014,

The Russian Ambassador has hosted another ceremony for British World War II Veterans to receive the Ushakov medal. The medal is in recognition of the efforts made by sailors from Britain to deliver supplies to Soviet forces in the northern cities of Murmansk and Arkhangelsk (Archangel). VoR's Juliet Spare reports.

Winston Churchill called the convoys ‘the worst journey in the world’. It was one of the most dangerous missions that British sailors embarked upon.

Foreign and Commonwealth Office rules stipulated that British veterans could not accept a foreign medal if the act happened more than five years ago. But last year the British Government gave Arctic Convoy veterans a new medal, the Arctic Star. The decision to allow veterans to receive the Russian Ushakov medal was made afterwards.

For those who were able to attend today’s event it marked the end of a 70 year wait. Veterans accompanied by their relatives were greeted by the Russian Ambassador Alexander Vladimirovich at his official home in Kensington Palace Garden.

More than 3,000 British veterans will eventually be given the medal at weekly ceremonies taking place at the Ambassador’s residence in London.
