'A century from the start of the First World War, and 70 years after the D-Day landings, 2014 this has been a year of special commemoration, focusing attention on the contribution and sacrifice made by millions for Britain. While we remember proudly those in the services who fought in the Flanders’ trenches, and those who drove the Nazis out of Normandy thirty years later, 2014 also reminds us, with equal pride, of the pivotal role played by the Merchant Navy in both world wars. So this year’s Merchant Navy Day on 3 September will be a day of poignant and proud reflection, as we remember the 45,000 British seafarers who lost their lives in both world wars providing our island nation with the goods needed for its very survival. The Shipping Minister, John Hayes. LINK
