Date for your Diaries:
Saturday 25th April at 10.40 a service of commemoration for the Gallipoli Campaign Centenary.
This was a World War 1 campaign which saw more than half a million allied troops, 400,000 of them British, participating on land and in ships off the coast of Gallipoli. In total there were more than 200,000 allied casualties, either killed, injured or missing in just a few days of fighting. Because of the massive Australian and New Zealand involvement the day is also known as ANZAC Day and is remembered every year in those countries.
This year marks the 100th Anniversary of Gallipoli and there will be a National Service of remembrance in London on the same day. You may also have seen the posts on this page about the artefacts from the Paddle steamer Barry....well she took part in Gallipoli, so we had our own Merchant vessel there in the thick of the action, so all the more important that as a town we remember.
The South Wales Borderers were also heavily involved in the fighting.
The Royal British Legion Barry branch would love as many people as possible to join them at this commemoration. Please meet at the Memorial Hall Cenotaph, Barry by 10.30. If any organisations wish to take part either by having a Standard on Parade or by laying a wreath, please contact: hernamewas.ss@googlemail.com I will arrange for messages to be passed on to the branch.
