Her Name Was Tregenna is a site originaly created as a tribute to Captain William Thomas Care of Barry, South Wales and the men of one particular ship, though it now carries additional material.
Although we do not represent them, a newly formed body known as the friends of Merthyr Dyfan Cymetery, Barry or Cyfeillion Mynwent Merthyr Dyfan of my home town of Barry, South Wales, have published two brochures regarding 34 Servicemen from the Great War and 14 Commonwealth War Graves dedicated to the Merchant Navy in the Second World War.
As recorded (RE: WW2 MN) 14 is not a high number for a town that lost more Merchant Seamen proportionately than any other port, The reasons are simple, most died at sea, victims to drowning, exposure and enemy fire etc. The brochures tribute the men buried in Merthyr Dyfan Cemetry. “Not all from our town but who are now forever part of it”
Although much information has been found and recorded in the brochures, We were drawn to the entry for Andrew Albert John Hunter: Grave K409. (SS. Tyndall) and that "We are unable to trace any information on Andrew or of the SS. Tyndall" This mention makes me personally intrigued and wanting to record more of this man's history / life or a simple tribute to another of the fallen, one of the many still not "Home from the Sea".
All findings will be passed on to the relevant bodies at both Barry and Lerwick. Andrew was a man of / from Lerwick and resided in the Barry / Vale area.
The cemetery at Barry contains war graves of both world wars, the burials of the 1914-1918 War being in various parts of the cemetery. Burials of the 1939-1945 War, 23 of which are in a group in Section R in the north-western corner of the cemetery, and the remainder are to be found elsewhere. ( CWGC: The Commonwealth War Graves Commission )
