The Covenant is a promise from the nation ensuring that those who serve in the Armed Forces are treated with fairness and respect, and the government’s decision will mean that all those in the RFA and Merchant Navy who have served on a civilian vessel while it was supporting Armed Forces will now be recognised and supported by the Covenant. Nautilus general secretary Mark Dickinson commented: ‘The Merchant Navy is often spoken of as the fourth arm of the nation’s defences and we are very pleased to see that the government has given this long-awaited recognition to civilian seafarers who have played an often pivotal role in strategic and humanitarian operations.’ For too long these gallant seafarers have been denied the proper respect and position that they deserve. We must now ensure that they receive the full appreciation and benefit bestowed by this decision, and I pay full tribute to the present minister and his team for this sensible and decisive judgement.
