Cargo ship Widestone, 3,192grt, (Turnbull, Scott & Co.) had sailed from Cardiff and Milford Haven with a cargo of coal for St John’s, Newfoundland and joined up with the New York bound 28 ship Convoy ON-144 which sailed from Liverpool on the 7th November 1942. On the 15th November U-521 part of a patrol line of 13 U-boats sights the Convoy and makes an unsuccessful attack. Due to bad weather the Convoy is lost and then found again on two separate occasions. On the 17th November 10 U-boats attack again and the Widestone is torpedoed by U-184 South-East of Cape Farewell and sinks in position 54’ 30N 37’ 10W. The Captain, William Storm, all 34 crew and her 7 DEMS gunners were lost.
