Would anyone know of anyone in the Republic of Ireland possibly with maritime connections that could attend an old sailors funeral ?A NURSING home is trying to find the family of an elderly man who died over the weekend. John McMullen passed away at Connolly Hospital in Dublin on Saturday. The 87-year-old, who is believed to have relatives in Co Derry, was a resident of Moyglare Nursing Home in Maynooth, Co Kildare. “The only known information on John McMullen, 87, is his date of birth was September 25, 1928, he was previously a sailor and also had links with Coleraine, Co Derry.” The funeral would be in Maynooth, Co Kildare. It would be sad for the chap to be buried without someone to say farewell. Anyone with or requires information is asked to contact Moyglare Nursing Home on 01 628 9022 or Reilly’s Funeral Directors at 045 868 230. LINK

Sailor, John McMullen. RIPUpdate: latest news that I am receiving from Ireland. Members of groups representing retired sailors and seamen are also expected to be present to pay their respects. Just in: A large turnout with guard of honour: There was a great turnout of locals, retired defence forces did a guard of honour. Lovely choir. Wonderful service. Mothers with babies and toddlers here and a fair number of young people too. They sang “We will raise him up on eagles wings...” White flowers were on his pale coloured coffin. The defence forces stood to attention. The people who had looked after him read and offered prayers of the faithful. A great send off for a man with no known relatives. The funeral cortège is approaching the graveyard in wild winds and starting to rain. I am so pleased to have helped in a small way. Keith LINK 1LINK 2

I attended the funeral of john McMullen today after seeing how he had no known relatives. I would like to find relatives of his but I don't know where to start. It was a very nice service today for a man who nobody knew but strangely I felt like i did know him. I want to help in any way I can!

Thank you for attending, your condolences and expressing your wishes to help further. I do hope you will look in again and see this. Perhaps you could e.mail me at: hernamewas.ss@googlemail.com with John McMulen RIP as the title. I would imagine many have taken a look at finding out more. I did all that I could initially, then as the funeral neared worked more on people attending but, will now be continuing to find more on the man. I would be pleased to work with you on this. Regards Keith. LINK
