An appeal has launched to find the next-of-kin of an 87-year-old man who died in Dublin’s Connolly Hospital on Saturday.Very little is known of the man, named as John McMullen other than that he had been a sailor and according to Kildare Now, he had links to Coleraine. Mr McMullen was born September 25th 1928. If you know any of his family or friends, contact Moyglare Nursing Home on 01 62 9022 or Reilly’s Funeral Directors on 045 868230 so that arrangements can be made for Mr McMullen’s funeral. It would be great if anyone could attend the funeral to say farewell. The funeral would be in Maynooth, Co Kildare. If you know of anyone that could go along, any maritime related groups , organisations etc, please ask them to contact the above Nursing home or Funeral director. Thanks Keith. LINK

Crowd of up to 300 attend funeral of man who had no visitors for five years in nursing home LINK 1According to a Kildare Now reader: "The funeral was attended by over 300 people. It was a very moving occasion with a guard of honour provided by Defence Forces veterans. Beautiful songs like The Voyage by Christy Moore was played and The Derry Air was performed as the remains were taken from the church." LINK 2300 people attended the funeral of the elderly man who had received no visitors for five years prior to his death. John McMullen died in Moyglare Nursing Home in Maynooth and the workers were concerned that the old man would have no one to attend his funeral. A public appeal was made to locate the relatives of the deceased and instead of locating them, 300 members of the public joined together and in solidarity buried the old man. According to a Kildare Now reader the occasion was “very moving”, with a “guard of honour provided by Defence Forces veterans”. Songs such as The Voyage by Christy Moore and The Derry Air were played as the man was taken to his final place of rest. LINK 3
