Hello
During the 2nd World War over 1000 Norwegian cargo ships was acquired by the Norwegian government in exile in London, and consolidated as "Nortraship", a major contributor to the allied forces victorious mission against the Germans.
Today only one of these ships still exists, DS Hestmanden. The boat has been restored back to old glory, and will soon be able to sail with the same old steam engine as it was launched with in 1911.
The museum "Vest-Agdermuseet" in Kristiansand now administrates the vessel and will open a floating warsailor museum on board next year. As the project leader for the vessel I am looking for pictures and film showing DS Hestmanden. DS Hestmanden sailed along the English coast during both the 1st and the 2nd world war.
We have some historic pictures of the ship, but alas none from the period 1940-1945, when the ship carried all sorts of cargo along the coast of England. My hope is that you may have some imagery of the vessel from these years. I assume there are no existing photos of the vessel from the 1st world war.
Is it even possible for you to find anything like this in your archives? If you look at the website www.warsailors.com/singleships/hestmanden.html you will find a comprehensive list of all the vessel's documented journeys during the war. Perhaps the dates will help you if your imagery are recorded in some database.
Yours sincerely
