Stafford Arctic Convoys veteran's Russian medal arrives two years after he passed awayA STAFFORD veteran of the perilous Arctic Convoys has been awarded a medal by the Russian government after applying for the honour – but sadly he did not survive to receive the accolade in person. Ernie Yates filled in the paperwork for the Ushakov Medal more than two years ago, but passed away in May 2014, just four days before his 90th birthday. His widow Irene has now received the medal from a representative of the Russian Embassy. The Soviet military award, created in 1944, is being presented to those who risked their lives to help deliver vital supplies by sea to Russia during the Second World War. LINK
