On Saturday 15th November 2008, WREATHS were laid at the Merchant Navy Memorial in Mariners' Green, Newport in memory of seamen who gave their lives in two world wars.
Among those who paid their respects were the deputy Lord Lieutenent of Gwent Lieutenant-general Sir Hayman Joyce, Newport mayor Councillor Noel Trigg, Paul Flynn MP for Newport West, Jessica Morden, MP for Newport East, AMs and councillors as well as ex-service organisations.
Prayers were said by the Rev, fr Edward Mathias- Jones, padre to Newport branch of the Merchant Navy Association.
Mr Bertram Bale, chairman of the Newport branch of the Merchant Navy Association and national vice-chairman said that Newport lost more merchant seaman during World War Two than any city apart from Liverpool.
"The total number of Newport men dying ast sea during World War Two was greater than the combined Newport casualty list for the three fighting services" Mr Bale said.
"Those who sailed under the Red Duster brought food and munitions of war to a beleaguered Britain and in so doing played a large part in winning the war."
The memorial service was attended by parties from other ex-service organisations.
The parade was marshalled by Regimental Sergeant - major Nigel Mudd of 104 regiment, Royal Artilley based at Raglan Barracks, Newport.
