• I WONDER how many flagpoles there are in Camden. (London)
Owners of flagpoles will wish to know that Merchant Navy Day is Saturday September 3, the day to salute our merchant seafarers by flying the Red Ensign – details at: www.merchantnavyday.co.uk. Those who don’t own a flagpole might fly the flag by wearing a pin badge.
It would be appropriate, too, were narrowboats and other craft plying the Regent’s Canal to fly the “Red Duster” that day.
The Merchant Navy Day service will be held, in the open air, on Sunday September 4 from noon in Trinity Square Gardens, just yards from Tower Hill Underground. After the service visitors are welcome to pay their respects at the national Merchant Navy memorials. Many of the mariners present then go for a “run ashore” to nearby hostelries, where they tell sea stories, yarns and tales of the deep!
Those unable to take part formally might consider pausing that weekend to reflect on the comestibles and commodities that are brought by ships to our island homes every day.
