PENARTH’S “VITAL ROLE” IN D-DAY PREPARATIONS: THE US NAVY’S TRIBUTE
The American Naval Base was established at Penarth Docks (now- of course- Penarth Marina) on October 26th 1943 . In command was Captain Arnold Winfield Chapin USN.
After the war was over Captain Chapin wrote an open letter to the people of Penarth and presented Penarth Council with a modernistic painting of D-Day preparations at Penarth by the Polish captain of one of the many ships crammed into the docks.
