New national Merchant Navy Memorial to be erected on Plymouth Hoe.
The monument will be sited prominently between the city’s famous statue of Sir Francis Drake and the Armada Memorial. It will pay tribute to the 45,000 merchant seamen who lost their lives during the First and Second World Wars.
The monument will be located only a few metres away from the green where Drake is believed to have finished his game of bowls before sailing out to defeat the Armada in 1588.
WILL UPDATE ASAP.
Each of the four sides of the column will contain inset black granite panels detailing the important role the Merchant Navy has played throughout history in both peacetime and times of conflict.
