Russian medals presented to Arctic convoy veterans.
ARCTIC convoy veterans have been honoured with Russian medals.
Five of the special Ushakov medals were presented by Russian counsellor Konstantin Shlykov, on the instructions of Russian president Vladimir Putin.
The Arctic convoys saw vital supplies carried through the dangerous waters around Scandanavia to Russia during the Second World War.
On the Allied side, 85 merchant vessels and 16 Royal Navy warships were lost.
Mr Shlykov said it was a huge privilege to present the medals.
‘What they did 70 years ago, taking part in what Sir Winston Churchill rightly called the worst journey in the world, was extraordinary, even among what is considered to be beyond the call of duty,’ he said.
