Teesside veteran presented with his Arctic Convoy medal8 Nov 2016 A SECOND World War veteran has been recognised for his bravery during the Arctic Convoys in 1944. John Podzukites has been awarded the Medal of Ushakov by the Russia Federation. The 93-year-old, who lives at Ingleby Care Home, Ingleby Barwick, joined merchant vessel Fort Vercheres in March 1944, tasked with delivering essential supplies to the Soviet Union during the height of the war. Born in South Bank, Middlesbrough, the seaman was part of the convoy which come under 18 attacks in two days from German U-boats and aircraft. By May 1944, the convoy arrived safely at its destination without loss. LINK
