Merchant Navy memorial unveiled on Weymouth seafrontA memorial to seamen who lost their lives in the Merchant Navy and fishing fleets has been unveiled. More than 3,000 people signed a petition in support of a memorial for Dorset seamen set up by the The Merchant Navy Association last year. Almost £30,000 was subsequently raised for the five-tonne Portland stone sculpture on the seafront in Weymouth. The association's Steve Donnelly said public support for the project had been "phenomenal". He said: "It's an important memorial that many local people and visitors wanted - people said they had lost relatives during the war and appreciated what the Merchant Navy had done for us." The 6ft-high (1.8m) monument on The Esplanade was unveiled by the Lord Lieutenant of Dorset, Angus Campbell. LINK
