More than 100 people pay their respects at emotional funeral for Kenley Second World War hero More than 100 mourners gathered at All Saints Church, on Church Road, last Saturday (January 7), to remember David Pigott who died on December 20, aged 93. Speaking after the funeral, Mr Pigott's wife Sheila talked about her husband's incredible bravery during the war where he helped deliver life-saving supplies from Iceland to Russia over a period of four months in 1942. At the time, Mr Pigott had just turned 19, and battled temperatures of -40 degrees Celsius, while riding 80ft waves on the ships they were navigating across the Norwegian and Barents seas. Because of a restriction put in place by the UK government, Mr Pigott was unable to receive Russia's own version of the Arctic Star - the Medal of Ushakov. However, following a lengthy campaign by former Croydon South MP Richard Ottaway, Mr Pigott was given the Arctic Star by Russian president Vladimir Putin in 2014.
