Merchant Navy Commemoration Service A ceremony was held to honour members of the Merchant Navy and remember those of the earlier Mercantile Marine. The ceremony was hosted by the Vale of Glamorgan Council on Friday 01 September, 10.00am at the Civic Offices in Barry. The ceremony remembered and tributed all seafarers’ past and present. The Vale authority did ‘Fly the Red Ensign for Merchant Navy Day’ and both remembered and honoured the brave Merchant Seafarers who have made the ultimate sacrifice throughout our history, but particularly during the two World Wars and conflicts since. Merchant Navy Day commemorated in BarryTHE Vale council commemorated Merchant Navy Day Friday, September 1 ahead of the official day on Sunday, September 3. Those attending were Vale mayor, Cllr Janice Charles – who gave a reading during the service; Vale MP Alun Cairns, Vale AM Jane Hutt, Vale council leader, Cllr John Thomas, Llantwit Major mayor, Cllr Jane Thomas and Barry town mayor, Cllr Nic Hodges. Mr Cairns said: “It was an honour to lay a wreath at the Merchant Navy Day on Friday. It was a moving service, and the reception afterwards was a great opportunity to catch up with new and longstanding friends, who could share many inspiring stories about the work of the Merchant Navy.” LINK
