Theo Strenstrom, former Barry mayor and now leader of Barry Town Council, described Mr Holmes as a "mentor", and a "sincere, caring person who was very, very strong-willed".
Mr Holmes, who lived in Morgan Street in the Castleland ward, was a long-term member of the Amicus trade union.
He was also chairman for his local Constituency Labour Party and was described by the CLP's secretary Gill Davies as a "stalwart".
Mr Holmes' wife, Margaret, died several years ago. He had two daughters, Shelagh and Lynne, and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

To All The Members of the Barry Branch of the Merchant Navy Association It was with great sadness that we here in Kinsale, learned of the death of our great Barry friend,
Haydn Holmes. He will be remembered with great fondness from everybody that knew him, from all the visits he made here, especially at our Sea Sunday events.
We will pray for him, and light candles, to buoy the channel on his last voyage, to that great Harbour that is God's Arms, outstretched in welcoming him home.
Please pass on our condolence to Hayden's family & Friends. Capt. Phil Devitt Harbour Master Kinsale.
Alfred, Lord Tennyson
Sunset and evening star, And one clear call for me! And may there be no moaning of the bar, When I put out to sea, But such a tide as moving seems asleep, Too full for sound and foam, When that which drew from out the boundless deep Turns again home. Twilight and evening bell, And after that the dark! And may there be no sadness of farewell, When I embark; For tho' from out our bourne of Time and PlaceThe flood may bear me far, I hope to see my Pilot face to face When I have crossed the bar.

A FRIEND OF KINSALE, BARRIAN
Haydn Holmes
HAS CROSSED THE BAR.
PLEASE RELATE THIS MESSAGE TO ALL HIS FRIENDS IN KINSALE.
What is dying A ship sails and I stand Watching till she fades on the horizon, and someone at my side says “she is gone”. Gone where ? Gone from my sight, that is all. She is just as large as when I saw her The diminished size and total loss of sight is in me, not her, and just at that moment when Someone at my side says “she is gone” there are others who are watching her coming, and other voices take up a glad shout “there she comes” and that is dying. Bishop Brent.
