TOWER HILL MEMORIAL
Arthur Newman was a Captain in the Merchant Navy, he was the Master of the SS. Peerless when it was torpedoed and sunk in 1917, he was taken on board the U-52 and was apparently taken around Ireland and Scotland and eventually ended up in a POW camp in Brandenburg.
He was later Captain of the Day Rose which was torpedoed by U-Boat U552, this being at position 46o - 32n, 53o 00w, East coast off Newfoundland. Entrance to Trinity Bay north of St. Johns 14/01/1942. The Captain of the U-Boat U552 was called Erich Tropp and according to records found, it took five torpedoes to sink her, three failed or missed only two hit.
His brother Harold Newman was serving on the SS. Warrior and was lost in action 21/04/1917, some 7 miles from Fratelli Rocks.

Son of Charles Robert and Anne Grace Newman (nee Durie), of 31, Rawden Place, Cardiff. Born at Great Yarmouth.

Arthur’s son also called Arthur Newman was torpedoed whilst serving on the Narragansett, an oil tanker sank by the U-Boat U105 Captained by Heinrich Schuch on 25/03/1942 this being 250 miles off Bermuda.
