Poppy Week in Penarth.
MEMBERS of the Penarth Branch of the Royal British Legion and other volunteers will as usual be out and about collecting money for the Poppy Appeal during the week before Remembrance Sunday. If you feel able to give a couple of hours of your time to help just call 0207 07870 and ask to speak to Tony or call in at the caravan, which will be parked on Windsor Road during Poppy Week.
The Legion provides financial, social and emotional support to all who have served or are currently serving in HM Armed Forces, and their dependents. To be eligible for help from the Legion you need to have received only one week’s pay in any of the services, including the Reserve forces.
During the three months between April 1 and June 30 of this year the regional office spent £307,536 on welfare needs. Some £71,000 of this money was spent in the Vale. Our Remembrance Sunday church service this year will take place on November 8 at All Saints’ Church. The parade, under the direction of Lieutenant Mike Clark of the Army Cadet Force and led by the Penarth British Legion Band led by Philip Morris, will depart from Station Approach at 10.15am sharp to proceed via a wreath laying ceremony at the Garden of Remembrance at the top end of Alexandra Park to All Saints’ Church, where the Rector and Royal British Legion Chaplain Rev Peter Cox will conduct the service, which will commence at 10.55am with Last Post; followed by the Two Minute Silence in memory of the Fallen.
During the service, time will be set aside for those who may wish to place a cross within the sanctuary in remembrance of friends or relatives who gave their lives at war in the service of their country. There will be crosses available at the church for those who have not been able to obtain them before the service. After the service the parade will re-form and march the short distance back to Station Approach, where the parade will be dismissed, after which the Penarth British Legion will be delighted to be your hosts should you by this time feel a pressing need for a drink and possibly a snack, to finish the proceedings of the morning in an appropriate manner.
We welcome anyone who would like to take part in the parade or just join us at All Saints’ for this service of thanksgiving for the sacrifice made by our service men and women past and present. A short ceremony to observe Armistice Day will take place at the junction of Windsor Road and Glebe Street between 10.55am and 11.10am on Wednesday morning, November 11, after which a wreath will be laid at the war memorial in St Augustine’s Church. All members of the public are most welcome to attend.
