Today we remember the eight brave, courageous and selfless lifeboat crew members of the Penlee Lifeboat ‘Solomon Browne‘ who, on the evening of the 19th December 1981 left Mousehole to help the crew of the ill fated coaster ‘Union Star’, only never to return home. We will remember them. On this day 36 years ago, six days before Christmas, the Solomon Browne launched from Penlee Lifeboat Station against hurricane winds to rescue the crew of the 1,400 ton coaster Union Star. Tragically, the eight lifeboat volunteers and the eight people on the Union Star all lost their lives. Gone but never forgotten, today we honour those that gave their lives to save others. LINK

Also, this month in history; 100 years ago Newquay RNLI lifeboat station suffered the loss of the town’s lifeboat James Stevens No.5, when brave volunteer crew launched into extreme gale conditions to rescue sailors from a steamship in difficulties at Holywell. Battling rough seas, the lifeboat was over turned by a big wave and became wrecked on the rocks. Most importantly all the lifeboat crew on board were rescued. Coxswain James Gill was awarded a Silver Medal, and Second Coxswain RJ Trebilcock was awarded the Bronze Medal for their gallantry and leadership.
