No family or friends to attend funeral of former Merchant Seaman. Will you?The funeral takes place next Wednesday (March 21) of former merchant seaman, Leonard Fellows, who has died aged 82. In itself, this is not news. However, Mr Fellows, who lived for the final few months of his long life at the Bellavista Nursing Home in Barry, has no known family – aside from a 92-year-old sister in Australia – and no known friends. Byron Jones, Secretary of the Merchant Navy Association (Wales), writes:
"In 1939 the Fellows family lived at 71, Everard Street, Barry and the brother of Leonard, Edward Fellows, died on October 14, 1942 aged 22 when his ship, the SS Stornest, was sunk by the German submarine U-706, west of Ireland.
"He is commemorated on the Tower Hill Memorial, Panel 103."
Mr Jones also said that members of the Merchant Navy Association (Wales) will attend the funeral, and provide the Red Ensign (The ’Red Duster’) for Mr Fellows’ coffin.

"The Barry GEM has been contacted by Mr Fellows’ family members in Australia, on behalf of his sister Betty, who is 90. She and family members know that Len was a private person who would not have appreciated a big funeral. "The family would prefer that people unknown to Mr Fellows do not attend."
