SS Shieldhall given smart new look ahead of 2018 sailing seasonA HISTORIC cruise ship about to launch its new season has returned to Southampton after being given a major facelift. SS Shieldhall, which is staging its first cruises on May 26-27, has had a fresh coat of paint applied to its hull and anchors. Other maintenance work carried out in dry dock in Falmouth included anti-fouling and the installation of new foremast lights. Shieldhall’s return to her home port comes just weeks after National Historic Ships UK made the vessel one of its regional flagships. LINK

How a sludge ship became a flag ship
It was 30 years ago on July 28, 1988, that Southern Water passed ownership of an unheralded vessel that had been in service between 1980-85, to a recently formed charity. That charity was the Solent Steam Packet, and the vessel Steamship Shieldhall. Performing a very perfunctory role for Southern Water – taking treated sludge to the ‘dumping grounds’ to the east of the Isle of Wight – Shieldhall was destined for a more glamorous future role as a passenger vessel and as a flagship for the National Historic Fleet, which she continues to perform to this day.
