Ushakov Medal presentation ceremony – Tribute paid to a war hero
We continue to award the Ushakov medal to WWII veterans who took part in the Arctic convoys. This high Russian governmental award is long overdue for them. Yet not everyone was included in the list provided to us by the British side.
On the 1st of June 2018, the Russian Consul General in Edinburgh Mr Andrey A.Pritsepov presented Ushakov Medal to one of those veterans Alexander Gillan. According to Decree of the President of the Russian Federation the Medal is awarded «for personal courage and valor shows during World War II while participating in the Arctic Convoys.
Alexander Gillan shared his memories about the passages to Archangel and Murmansk on board of HMS Sheffield under repeated attacks by the enemy during the Arctic Convoys. "HMS Sheffield" took part in the famous Battle of the North Cape on December 26, 1943, when the battle cruiser "Scharnhorst" was sunk by the Royal Navy. Alexander Gillan witnessed the death of almost the entire "Scharnhorst" team in the icy waters of the Arctic. That made a strong impression on him, remaining one of the most difficult war memories.
