Commemorating an MP’s furious outburst on behalf of seafarers
Merseyside Maritime Museum
This weekend marks the anniversary of a significant date for the safety of seafarers. On 22 July 1875 Samuel Plimsoll lost his composure and his temper in the House of Commons, demanding better standards for ships, which were often dangerously overloaded at the time. This unusual outburst eventually led to the adoption of the Plimsoll Line and a reduction in the number of deaths at sea. Read all about it, and how it is commemorated in our collection, on the blog: LINK
