Fidlers Green When I told my dad “I’m going to join the merchant navy” He told me that I must be mad Or at least a little crazy, Those rough sailor blokes Are the roughest blokes I’ve seen I’ve seen them brawling in the pubs All bound for “Fidlers Green” A troop ship took you off to war Crewed by those gallant men How many of those “rough sailor men” Were never seen again?” Our island nation needed them Those men that you deride They braved the cold Atlantic sea To dock on t’other side. Young galley boys to skippers From all corners of the land They climbed aboard those merchant ships To give a helping hand. So, acknowledge those who gave their all Let’s have a celebration In honour of those sailor boys Who died to save our Nation. Many trained like me, On the T.S. Vindicatrix I was Lucky,I sailed the seas in peacetime All part of the great matrix I swaggered up the gangplank With all with all the pride that I could muster For fluttering at the stern was the magnificent “Red Duster” Proud to be part of Britains maritime history Brian J Chaplin R693929 2018
