On 6th September 2018, the Consul General of Russia in Edinburgh Mr Andrey A.Pritsepov presented Ushakov Medal to relatives of an Arctic Convoys Veteran John McGaig Lowrie, who passed away just few weeks after receiving notification about the high award. According to Decree of the President of the Russian Federation the Medal is awarded «for personal courage and valor shows during World War II while participating in the Arctic Convoys.
A son, three daughters and a son-in-law took part in the meeting.They shared their memories about John Lowrie and veteran’s memories about the tragic fate of PQ-17 and other passages through the restless waters of the Arctic to Murmansk and Archangel under repeated attacks by the enemy during the Arctic Convoys.
They also received a set of the commemorative gifts commissioned to mark the 75th anniversary of the first Convoy codenamed Dervish.
