National Memorial Arboretum The Merchant Navy Convoy Wood is dedicated to over 46,000 British merchant seafarers and fishermen lost in conflict during the 20th century, including two World Wars, Falklands, Kuwait, Vietnam, Iran, Iraq and others.
British cargo vessels played a critical role during the Second World War, carrying cargo, troops, armaments, ammunition and fuel to every theatre of war, with the seafarers being civilians that faced the enemy and sea with equal bravery and courage. Originally the wood had 2,535 trees, each representing a British vessel lost during the conflict.

First held in 1975, National Tree Week is the UK’s Largest tree celebration marking the launch of the start of the winter tree planting season. Although we are still a ‘young’ Arboretum, there are around 30,000 trees in the grounds which are rapidly growing into a unique living tribute to service and sacrifice.
